  2. pioneered research into vitamins. Funk
  3. proposed that certain diseases are caused by
  4. dietary deficiencies. In 1912 he demonstrated
  5. that rice extracts cure beriberi in pigeons.
  6. As the extract contains an amine, he
  7. mistakenly concluded that he had discovered a
  8. class of `vital amines', a phrase soon
  9. reduced to `vitamins'.
